We want to save money, too

Dear Editor: Governor Whitman has allowed the deregulation of utilities in order to save customers money. That same principle should also apply to Jersey City’s water customers. In order to save money, the customers should choose their utility. Presently, Jersey City total water rate (water and sewerage) is $4.53 per ccf. Newark’s rate is $3.39 and Trenton is $3.33. It is feasible to tap into Newark’s water system with a saving of $1.14 per ccf. Since the creation of the MUA, Jersey City’s rates have increased 25 percent. It will continue to increase because the MUA does not need the consent of the Jersey City council. Jersey City owns the water, but it is managed by the MUA with the profits going to a foreign national firm in France. Personally, I believe many people would prefer to have profits remain in the United States. Newark is an American city. Yvonne Balcer
