Help is available for parents whose kids visit websites

Dear Editor: Today’s kids are becoming masters of the Internet domain. When they surf, shop, chat and even study online, they share personal information with the websites they visit. Unfortunately, many parents don’t know what information is collected from their children or how it is used. In an effort to put parents in charge of their kids’ information, the FTC has established new rules for website operators. The publication, How To Protect Kid’s Privacy Online, describes some of things parents should look for from the sites their kids visit and websites’ responsibilities under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule. Copies of the publication are available free from Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Response Center, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580. Toll free: 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).TDD: 202-326-2502. For more information about how websites can comply with the Rule, visit the FTC online at http://www/ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/coppa.htm, or call the FTC for a copy of the publication How To Comply With The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule. These publications and more than 150 other publications are available from the FTC at www.ftc.gov – click on Consumer Protection. Randy Satterfield, Office of Consumer and Business Education
