Three arguments against the Manhattan Building Company’s plans

Dear Editor: So we’re seriously discussing whether we will or won’t let the Manhattan Building Company build an 18-story monolith on the edge of town. Allow me to chime in with an argument or two that I haven’t heard from anybody else yet. First of all, we’re talking about bringing into town about 1,000 people who would live in that 340-unit building, blocks away from all the action. Economically speaking, the only Hoboken business that might benefit from it would be Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and they are already getting less and less able to cope with demand. The people who could afford to live in those rental units will be working 60 to 80 hour weeks, probably in Manhattan (which they will have to access through the Lincoln Tunnel) and won’t have the time to patronize downtown Hoboken shops and restaurants. Second of all, isn’t it ironic that the company, which professes to have only Hoboken’s interests at heart, is called “Manhattan Building Company”? Give them a chance, and we’ll find ourselves struggling against the wind, which will whistle in the canyons between sun-obscuring skyscrapers. And third, check out their home in cyberspace at wwww.manhattanbuilders.com. If you have the time to wait for their images to download, you have the time to sit in traffic at the Lincoln Tunnel. Those guys can’t build so much as a proper web page. After looking at their website, somehow it doesn’t surprise me that they’re planning to grace us with a building so tall that should a fire break out in it, our firefighters, equipped in accordance with standing zoning variances, won’t even be able to reach the top floors.
